RYLA Convention 2002 News

Thanks from 2002 International RYLA Chair

To: RYLA Leaders & Barcelona Team
From: John W. Nugent, General Chair, RI-RYLA 2001-2002

I want to thank all of you for the outstanding job you did in Barcelona, and your dedicated service to Rotary's RYLA program. Your leadership was the key to making our convention a success. It was an honor and pleasure for me to be able to work with all of you this year.

It was good to see committee members José, Dennis, Leni, Steve, and Charles in Barcelona. It was also good to be with RI Director Liaison, Keith Barnard-Jones, Foundation Trustee Liaison, Sonny Brown, General Secretary, Ed Futa, and past RIVP and incoming RI-RYLA Chair, Abe Gordon. We missed Carrie Hanson, but it was good to have Christine Michonski and Jill Hazard with us. We also missed our friends Sergio, Carl-Wilhelm, and Richard.

Marlene Brown, you and Earl have done so much for RYLA this year I don't have words to thank you enough. We are most fortunate to have you taking care of our web site. I believe that soon every Rotary District will have a RYLA and every RYLA will be linked to <rotaryryla.com>.

Those of you who had the opportunity to be in Barcelona, I'm sure, will agree that we had a wonderful International Convention. As Abe Gordon pointed out on Wednesday we had at least 19 separate countries represented at that session alone. And watching the participants during the activity circuit on Tuesday was a real treat.

Thanks to Rich Bennett and Barry Braswell for stepping in as facilitator and Sgt-at-Arms respectively. Also thanks to Sgt-at-arms, Kenichi (Ken) Hamana. I've never seen sgt-at-arms work harder than Ken and Barry. Great job!

Thanks to Julie Thomson who gave an excellent presentation and served as workshop leader, and to all our workshop leaders and facilitators, Madhav Borate, Marlene Brown, Balan Dass, Allan Davies, Christopher George, Sabine Hinze, Diane Kessel, Nancy Labib, Kimberly Nunn, Varun Sahni and Rich Bennett.

Thanks to our Findings Committee Mark Duford, José Luis Goytre Boza, and committee Chair Ken Robertshaw. These Rotary/RYLA leaders pulled double duty more than once.

When, during my presentation in Barcelona, I said I found RYLA to be made up of some of the most passionate Rotarians I've ever met I wasn't, as they say, blowing smoke. I will remember this Rotary year very fondly. I'm indebted to RI President, Richard King, for giving me this assignment. It gave me the opportunity to meet and work with all of you.

I know I speak on behalf of our President when I say thank you for your flexibility, your dependability, and your service to Rotary and RYLA. Thank you for "Making Mankind Your Business"!

Yours In Rotary Service,
John W. Nugent

2002 International RYLA Convention

Rotary International President Richard D. King announced a bold and innovative program for the 2002 Rotary International Convention in Barcelona. The result was a convention more inclusive, informative, and cost-effective than ever before.

A unique format: Instead of pre-convention offerings, Rotaract, Interact, RYLA, and Youth Exchange "mini-conventions" were integrated into the main convention program.

A plenary session titled "Rotary's Investment in Youth," highlighting Rotaract, Interact, RYLA, and Youth Exchange, was an inspirational highlight of the program.

Rotary International held a special orientation session for first-time attendees prior to the convention.

A special free Rotary Fellowship Salute welcomed us to enchanting Barcelona. Here we met the RI Board and Rotary Foundation Trustees and enjoyed a variety of local entertainment.

What did it mean for me?
A more accessible, user-friendly, and economical convention requiring fewer days away from home.

Unprecedented opportunities to network with Rotaractors, Interactors, Youth Exchange students, RYLArians, and Rotarians.

Plenary sessions and workshops that will help you become a better leader, providing ideas that you can take back home to help improve your program.

Fewer, more-affordable ticketed events. An experience you will never forget!

Who could participate? All past, present, and future RYLArians as well as all interested Rotarians are welcome to attend.

How did I register?
Download the registration and housing request forms or register online. Questions regarding registration should be directed to rireg@rotaryintl.org.

What were the registration fees? Register early! RYLArians who register prior to 31 December 2001 will encounter a US$60 registration fee. RYLArians who register by 31 March 2002 will encounter a US$80 registration fee. RYLArians registering on-site will encounter a US$100 registration fee.

How did I take advantage of my time in Barcelona? Apart from the RYLA Convention, there were many exciting opportunities for youth in Barcelona. Activities began on Friday, 21 June, with the grand opening of the House of Friendship.

House of Friendship at the Palacio Victoria Eugenia — Based on regional Spanish culture, the House of Friendship included opportunities to explore regional cuisine and entertainment such as Spanish dancing. The House of Friendship will also feature Spain's finest clothing, leather, wine, and porcelain.

Barcelona sites:
Gothic Quarter — the nucleus of the medieval buildings and the Roman fortifications.
Las Ramblas — a series of pedestrian-oriented boulevards is so much a part Barcelona that Spaniards coined a name for its users: "Ramblistas."
Antoni Gaudí's art nouveau architecture — featuring special bus tours and exhibitions.
Ribera district — the church of Santa Maria del Mar and the Museu Picasso.

How can I get involved? If you are interested in assisting with the RYLA convention, please contact us as soon as possible.

Dear 2001-2002 RI RYLA Committee Members:

Warm greetings from Rotary International World Headquarters! On behalf of Christine Michonski, Community Programs Supervisor and myself, we are excited to work with you to make the 2002 RYLA Convention a successful event. RI President Rick King has designed the 2002 Rotary International Convention, 23-26 June, with a focus on youth by placing the RYLA Convention within the context of the RI Convention.

The inclusion of the RYLA Convention into the RI International Convention Is a unique opportunity for Rotarians to be around youth and for youth to Learn about Rotary -- providing new opportunities for networking, making new friendships, and strengthening leadership and service.

We would like your assistance and ask for your support of the 2002 RYLA Convention by contributing to ideas for program content, speakers, activities, "style" (e.g. panel sessions, break-outs, small workshops, etc.), and recommendations for Sergeants-at-Arms. While Rotary International staff will be promoting the meetings, inviting speakers, arranging logistics and coffee breaks, and providing on-site support, the success of the meeting in terms of content and leaders is driven by the International RYLA Committee!

Submit your ideas by 19 October for the following aspects of the 2002 RYLA Convention:

1. "Style" of convention/meeting (such as large group sessions, small workshops, panel discussions, etc.):

2. Potential topics/program content (such as leadership styles, relationship power, values, goal setting, etc.):

3. Activities (games, exercises, etc.):

4. Recommendations for speakers/activity leaders:
